A widely-held belief about ALS is that highly active individuals, including athletes, are more prone to the disease than the general population. Ongoing research has yet to provide conclusive evidence either way.
Since many athletes are public figures, their ALS diagnoses are often made public as well; this can contribute to the perception that athletes are more susceptible to getting ALS.
