Home care is a range of health and personal support services provided in a person's home. Services include help with daily activities, nursing care, and light housekeeping.
Most individuals with chronic health conditions, such as ALS, strongly prefer to remain in their homes for as long as they can. It is often of significant benefit to live at home instead of in a care facility; at home, there are fewer restrictions when it comes to visitors or keeping a schedule.
Home care services can be provided by home care agencies (HCAs), or private individuals that are hired directly, or as contractors.
Friends or family members may also handle some tasks.
The allocation of care responsibilities will depend on what each individual in the care team is capable of and permitted to do.
Most formal home care is conducted by personal care assistants. Some people may opt for live-in care if it is affordable.
